Localizing UX Copy: How German-Speaking reMarkable Users Gained a Customised On-Device Experience

Challenge
In April 2025, the reMarkable eCom team and I were already collaborating on the German site launch when the software team approached me to localize the device user interface into German – their first foreign language. They had previously worked with a translation agency but weren’t happy with the output quality. By launching a localization campaign for the DACH region, reMarkable aimed to give German-speaking tech enthusiasts the option to use their products in their native language, adding to the existing 3+ million users worldwide at the time.
Process
Thanks to the pre-established six-week software release cycle, we structure our collaboration so that three weeks are dedicated to localization and quality assurance work. Before each branch-off, we have a handover call to highlight new device features. We use Slack to resolve queries quickly, and we keep a log of questions and feedback to make future releases even smoother. With each update, I pay close attention to character limits, culturally appropriate phrasings, and CTA buttons designed to resonate with German-speaking users.
Outcome
Even after our first localization campaign, reMarkable saw a significant increase in sales from Germany, along with users permanently switching their system language to German. We also reduced the time spent fixing bugs from several hours to just 15 minutes. You can read more about reMarkable’s German-language user interface here. In October 2025, I visited the reMarkable headquarters in Oslo to discuss localization workflows. Since then, I’ve brought on localization specialists for French and Spanish to support our long-term, multilingual strategy.

“We need to learn how to maintain this level of quality for the new targeted languages. [Being] able to spot these differences in tone of voice is precisely what requires the expertise of skilled linguists & native speakers.”
